How to Prepare for Your First Professional Family Session (A Step-by-Step Guide)

HELLO! If you’re here, chances are you’ve been thinking about booking a family photo session, maybe for the very first time. First of all, I just want to say – this is such a meaningful step. You’re about to capture a precious chapter in your family’s story, and it’s going to become a part of your visual legacy for years to come.

I’ve had the honour of photographing countless families across Perth, and one thing I hear over and over again is: “That was actually so much easier and much more fun than we thought it would be!” And yes – even if someone was worried about their child having a meltdown, or if they felt unsure about how to pose, or how they would look on camera, it always unfolds beautifully.

So today, I’m walking you through exactly how to prepare for your first family session – not just from a logistical perspective, but also emotionally. Because truly, these sessions are about joy, connection, and presence. Let’s make it something you look back on with a full heart.

It’s Not About Perfection – It’s About Presence

Let’s be real: it’s easy to feel pressure when you invest in professional photography. Maybe you’re nervous about what to wear, worried your toddler might refuse to smile, or you’re feeling self-conscious in front of the camera.

Please take a breath. I don’t expect you or your children to perform or pose perfectly. In fact, the most beautiful images often come in between the “ideal” moments. Whether someone’s giggling uncontrollably or being a little moody, the camera clicks in just a fraction of a second, and it captures something real. Something honest.

A recent session comes to mind: a lovely family of five who had never done professional photos before. They followed my preparation advice, arrived on time, and simply allowed the day to unfold. The kids were silly at times, of course, as kids are – but instead of getting cross or trying to overly control the moment, the parents just rolled with it. That energy shaped the whole session. It was calm, connected, and full of laughter.

This gentle, patient rhythm is how I work at every session. And now, here’s how you can prepare to walk in with confidence and ease too.

Step-by-Step: Preparing for a Joyful and Authentic Family Photo Session

Wardrobe anxiety is one of the first concerns I hear – and it’s totally understandable. But I promise, this part can actually be simple and fun. I have a detailed wardrobe guide that I share with all of my families, once they have booked in their session.

  • Choose soft, neutral tones or muted colours that coordinate rather than match.
  • Avoid loud patterns, characters, or logos – they can distract from your beautiful faces and emotional connection.
  • Think texture over trends: linen, knits, cotton layers photograph beautifully, especially in natural light.
  • Comfort matters. Kids in stiff clothing or shoes they don’t like won’t feel relaxed. Prioritise ease and movement.
  • When in doubt, I’m always happy to help! I offer wardrobe guidance before every session, tailored to your location and season. Just text me a photo of your outfits and let me know how I can help.

2. Arrive Early… and Unrushed

I’ve noticed that arriving about 10 minutes early can completely change the energy of the session. You don’t have to stress about finding a carpark and it gives everyone a moment to breathe, get familiar with the setting, and ease gently into the experience. It is not recommended to arrive late. Besides feeling rushed, I have picked the shoot time to suit the lighting in your chosen location, I would hate for us to miss it.

Sessions can take place in-home, at a natural outdoor location, or even at the beach – depending on what’s meaningful for your family. Arriving calmly means we can start with light-hearted moments or a simple posed shot that everyone expects (the one all grandparents love) before moving into the more candid flow.

3. Let Go of “Perfect” Behaviour

One of the biggest gifts you can give yourself and your family is permission to be exactly who you are during your session. Truly. Children being silly, affectionate, curious, or even a little shy – it’s all welcome here.

Please don’t worry about how anyone’s acting in the moment. I’ll chat gently, get to know your little ones through playful prompts or quiet patience, and create a relaxed atmosphere where they feel safe and seen. And if you’re camera-shy yourself, I completely understand. Most of the adults I photograph tell me afterward, “I actually really enjoyed that.”

The photos taken in between the formal moments are usually the ones that bring tears to your eyes later – the subtle gestures, tiny fingers grasping yours, laughter spilling out unexpectedly.

4. Trust the Flow

I have a well-tested process that lets us move through your session in a way that doesn’t feel rigid or rushed. I’ll gently guide you when needed and step back to let moments unfold naturally when they do.

Even if it doesn’t feel like anyone “nailed it” in real-time, trust that the camera captures something magical. I know how to find the light, the angles, and the moments that reflect exactly what makes your family yours.

5. Celebrate Your Story How to display Perth family photos beautifully at home

Your family session isn’t just about producing pictures. It’s about celebrating who you are in this season. Whether your babies are crawling, running, or off to university soon, this time is worth honouring.

I always encourage clients to start thinking about how they’d like to display their images – whether that’s an heirloom-quality album, frames on the wall, or special gifts for loved ones. And I make that process easy too.

Why This Matters

Life moves so quickly. The days are long, but the years are short – and photography gives us a way to remember. Not the posed perfection, but the truth of this chapter: how you looked at each other, how you held your children, how they fit in your lap before they didn’t anymore.

Preparing for your first professional family session the right way helps make the experience more than just a task. It becomes a memory in itself – light-filled, full of love.

Ready When You Are

If all of this sounds like the kind of experience you’ve been looking for, I’d love to create it with you. Whether it’s your first session or your tenth, I’m here to make it feel relaxed, joyful, and uniquely yours.

You can take a peak here to get more inspiration for your Perth family photography session. When you are ready to book, we’ll chat about locations, wardrobe, what matters most to you, and the amazing moments we’ll capture together.

Until then, know that the steps you’re taking to preserve these moments are already such a beautiful gift to your family.

Warmly,
Jessica
