The Importance of Safety in Newborn

Photography Sessions

The Magic Happens in the Quiet Moments

HELLO! If you’ve ever held a newborn, you’ll know how unbelievably small and soft they are. Those tiny eyelashes, wrinkled toes, and the way they curl into your chest – it’s nothing short of magic. As a Perth newborn photographer, I’ve dedicated my work to capturing this extraordinary stage before it slips away all too quickly. But behind the gentle glow of every image is something just as important as artistry: safety.

I’ve had parents come to me with worries, unsure what to expect from their baby’s first photo session. Some are nervous that their baby will cry too much, others wonder about those curled-up poses they’ve seen online. So today, I want to bring you behind the scenes and talk openly about how I keep your baby comfortable, calm, and – always – safe throughout the process.

Capturing Beauty Without Compromise

The newborn stage brings with it so many tender emotions – joy, exhaustion, awe, vulnerability. Add a professional photo shoot into the mix, and parents sometimes feel pressure to “perform” or to have their baby posed just like that picture they saw on Pinterest. I completely understand that hope. At the same time, I gently guide my families to remember that no photo is worth even a second of discomfort or stress for your little one.

My approach to newborn photography is soft and baby-led. We move carefully, respectfully, and never force anything. Your baby’s safety comes first, always and without exception.

I remember a particular session where a parent had requested a pose where the newborn’s head is propped on their little hands – it’s a popular one, and so precious when done correctly. But here’s what most people don’t realise: that position isn’t naturally possible for a baby to hold on their own. It’s created through what’s called a composite – two images blended together where, in both, a parent’s hand is always supporting the baby. I explained and demonstrated exactly how it’s done and why we’d only attempt it if their baby was deeply asleep, settled, and showing no signs of distress. In that case, the baby stayed unsettled, so we moved on – and still captured beautiful, meaningful images. Because that’s what truly matters.

3 Ways I Prioritise Safety in Every Newborn Session

1. Baby Comes First – Always

Whether we’re working in my studio or at your home, I am completely guided by your baby.

  • If your baby needs a feed, we pause.
  • If they need a little cuddle or soothing, we take our time.
  • If a pose causes any sign of discomfort, we skip it – no questions asked.

I allow extra time in every session just for this reason. There’s no clock-watching, no rushing. These are your baby’s first portraits, and we do it gently and on their terms.

2. Never Leaving Baby Unattended (Even for a Second)

While I never place babies in elevated or risky positions, I often have a parent sit close by as a spotter – just in case. Even if I fully trust the pose, we take added precautions. Your baby is never left alone in or on any props. If a pose requires more support, either I will assist, or we’ll do it as a safe composite.

And yes, I’ll explain the entire process if you’re curious! Many parents actually love learning the behind-the-scenes of how we create these images.

3. It’s Okay If Your Baby Cries

There’s a common myth that the entire newborn session must unfold in calm and silence. But newborns cry. They wriggle. They need breaks. That’s completely normal. And it won’t ruin the session – I promise.

In fact, some of my most heartfelt photos are captured in the quiet seconds between fusses – a half-smile, a wide-eyed stretch, or the way they find dad’s finger and hold on tight. The camera shutter clicks in a fraction of a second, and I am always watching for the subtle, beautiful moments between the big ones.

Once your baby has been fed and wrapped snuggly, they usually settle into sleep more easily. I’ve worked with countless little ones, and I’ve rarely had a baby who didn’t settle at all. My job is to create a safe, peaceful space where both of you can breathe a little easier.

Why Safety Is the Heart of What I Do

As a mother and someone who knows just how precious – and fragile – this stage of life is, my goal is not just to give you incredible images. It’s to give you peace of mind. To create a comforting, respectful space where you feel heard, your baby feels secure, and the whole session becomes a memory in itself.

Safety doesn’t take away from the artistry of newborn photography. It is the artistry. It is where love lives. It’s why the images you take home won’t just be beautiful – they’ll also come with the comfort of knowing your little one was cared for with the deepest kindness.
