How to Capture the First Family Moments with Your Perth Fresh 48 Photographer
Those first 48 hours after birth are unlike anything else. The room is filled with flowers, cards, and the kind of exhausted, overwhelmed joy that words can barely touch. Your baby is here, tiny and perfect, and everything feels both enormous and incredibly fleeting. A Fresh 48 session is about capturing all of it – not just your newborn, but the full picture of those earliest hours, before the details begin to soften in your memory. If you are considering booking a Perth Fresh 48 photographer, here is everything you need to know to make the most of this very special kind of session.
What Makes a Fresh 48 Session So Meaningful
I have had the privilege of photographing both daughters of the same family in hospital – and I can tell you with complete sincerity that these sessions hold a particular kind of magic. Every tiny detail from those early days is worth preserving: the impossibly small fingers and toes, the first feeds, the first time a sibling leans in to meet someone new for the very first time.
One of those little girls had difficulty breastfeeding in the early days and was taking milk via a syringe. She grew out of this as she learned to suck, but that moment – that specific, tender detail of her earliest days – is now captured forever. It is exactly the kind of thing you might forget with time, and exactly the kind of thing you will one day be so grateful to have documented.
Beyond the baby, I also capture the keepsakes that tell the full story of the day: the hospital ID band, the birth card, the room number, the room itself, and all the beautiful cards and flowers that arrive to welcome your newest family member.

The One Session You Need to Prepare for in Advance
This is the only session I offer where preparation truly cannot wait until after the event. Because the goal is to photograph your baby within the first 48 hours of life, you simply do not have the luxury of searching for a photographer once your little one has arrived. Everything needs to be arranged beforehand, and I cannot stress this enough.

Here is what that preparation looks like in practice:
- Book your photographer before your due date. You want this confirmed and ready to go well in advance, so that when the moment comes, all you need to do is send a message.
- Pack everything you need in your hospital bag. If you would like to wear a beautiful gown or a special set of pyjamas for the photos, pack them. If you want your hair and makeup done, plan for that too – and have what you need with you.
- Think about your baby’s keepsakes ahead of time. A name plaque, a special wrap, a meaningful little detail – if you want it in the photos, it needs to be there with you.
- Do not forget the baby’s own special items. Sometimes families have a wrap or a keepsake that holds particular meaning, and these make for the most beautiful, personalised images.
Making the Most of the Light in Your Hospital Room
Hospital rooms can vary enormously when it comes to natural light, and light makes all the difference in photography. Because I can only visit during visiting hours, I would love for you to take note of when your room is at its brightest and most beautiful – and let me know. That is the window of time when I should come to you.
A few things to think about when it comes to light:
- Observe your room throughout the day. Morning light, afternoon light, and the golden hour before sunset can all feel completely different depending on which direction your window faces.
- Let me know what you notice. Even a simple message – “the room gets the most light between 10am and noon” – helps me plan the best possible visit.
- Avoid scheduling the session during harsh midday light if your room receives direct sun, as softer, more diffused light will always give us the most gentle and flattering results.

Everything I Can Capture in Those First 48 Hours
A Fresh 48 session is far more than just photos of your baby. It is a full documentary of the beginning – and there is so much to tell within those walls.

Here is a sense of what we might capture together:
- Tiny details: fingers, toes, eyelashes, that perfect little nose
- First feeds, including any that look a little different from what you expected – those moments matter just as much
- The first time siblings meet the new baby
- The first bath and first nappy change
- Mum, Dad, and any other important people in the room
- The room itself, with all its flowers, cards, and warmth
- Keepsakes: the ID band, the birth card, the room number, any special items you have brought along
Every family’s story looks a little different, and that is exactly what I am there to capture.
Why These Photos Matter Long After You Leave the Hospital
The hospital stay is brief. You will be home before you know it, and the pace of life with a newborn quickly takes over. What you might not expect is how fast those very first details begin to blur – the exact weight of that first morning, the specific way your baby looked in those first hours, the way the room felt when your family was all together for the very first time.
These images become something you return to. They become part of your family’s story in a way that is deeply personal, and for me, that is the whole point of photography. Capturing moments that are worthy of being remembered, always.
If you are expecting and considering a Fresh 48 session, I would love to hear from you. The earlier we connect, the more smoothly everything will come together when the moment arrives.
