I certainly wasn’t expecting to be a Whitfords beach animal photographer when I started in this career but what a fun morning this was! My friends kids got to experience this awesome horse ride on the beach earlier in the year. It was a dull overcast morning (which is great light for preventing the harsh shadows on faces). But our awesome ocean and sky looked pretty grey. I got a work out running up and down the beach getting pictures of the girls being led by the trainer. They ventured into the water as well as the laps of the sand.
I had an idea of the picture I wanted to create for my friend. The girls had to ride individually as there was not enough horses. But I knew I had to get them both in the same image. I wanted them in the water so I ended up asking the trainer to walk back and forward along the shore line as I ran back up the dune to get the individual shot of the girls from above.
Once at home I selected the two images that were similar in light and position of the girls. Then I merged them into the one scene. I was disappointed in the sky so I used a sunset image I had taken in the past and used that to make the back drop more exciting than dull grey. Then the little things like the trainer and horse leads had to go. No helmets would have been great but safety first! It wasn’t a staged image that I had planned so I definitely wanted the girls to be safe as their Whitfords animal beach photographer.
